Assassin’s Creed
Assassin’s Creed is an action-adventure game in which the player takes on the role of a skilled Assassin named Altair operating during the time of the Third Crusade. Using Altair’s remarkable athletic abilities and combat prowess, you must assassinate key targets in order to put an end to the Crusades.
Assassin’s Creed follows two stories. In 2012, a young man named Desmond finds himself being held against his will by a corporation called Abstergo Industries. Desmond is forced to use a device called the Animus, through which he relives the memories of Altair, an assassin who lives in the late twelfth century. Desmond is a descendent of Altair, and the company believes that Altair’s memories are the key to unlocking some great secret.
The player spends the bulk of their time reliving Altair’s life through the Animus. In the beginning of the story, Altair breaks the rules of the Assassin’s Creed, the code by which assassin’s live, and he is demoted to a mere initiate and stripped of his weapons. Altair’s master Al Mualim decides to give him a second chance, and sends him to assassinate nine key political and religious figures in the cities of Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus. Eliminating these men, Al Mualim believes, will put an end to the bloodshed of the crusades.
Although he’s lost his rank and weapons, Altair remains a highly skilled assassin. Most formidable among his abilities is his supreme athletic and acrobatic skill. Players will spend much of their time simply navigating the city, jumping from rooftop to rooftop and climbing to impossible heights without so much as a rope. Altair can climb nearly any surface, and with the games fluid free-running physics model, getting around any of the game’s cities is simple and fun.
While simply navigating the environments is part of the fun, Altair must eventually get down to the business of killing. The assassins believe that one must know their target intimately, so before Altair can make a move he must perform research missions. These missions involve eavesdropping or interrogating those close to the target, pick-pocketing vital information, and performing other tasks for informants and allies. Once enough information is gathered, it’s time to go after the target.
Altair’s targets are some of the most important figures of their time – so they are heavily guarded. While stealth is an assassin’s best friend, Altair can also hold his own in a proper fight. Players will have to master the skill of countering enemy attacks, which leaves them open for a killing blow. However, if Altair gets the drop an enemy guard or the target, he can perform a stealth kill that won’t raise suspicion until the target collapses to the ground. Once the target is down, Altair must make his escape. The guards are relentless and smarter than you might think, but if Altair can get out of their field of view, he can hide in a haystack or garden. He can even “hide in plain sight” by falling in with a group of monks who share the same white garb.
In addition to the primary missions, players can also take on a number of side quests. For example, Altair can help citizens who are being harassed by city guards – doing so may result in those people becoming Altair’s allies who will help him out when he’s being pursued. Other side tasks include hunting down Templars (sworn enemies of the Assassins) and finding the hidden flags of each faction in the game world.
