Mario and Sonic

Fifteen years ago you might not have imagined that you’d ever see Mario and Sonic in the same game, but the Mario & Sonic at the Olympics games have made that possibility a reality. Players first got the chance to play as their favorite characters from either game series in the Summer Olympics, and now they can do the same in the Winter Olympics with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.

This game takes players to the 2009 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada, and lets them see it through the eyes of their favorite characters from the Mario and Sonic franchises. Players can choose from among 20 different characters including Mario and Sonic themselves, villains like Bowser and Dr. Eggman, sidekicks like Luigi and Tails, and new characters including Donkey Kong and Silver. Players can even bring in their Miis to participate in the action. Each character not only has their own unique look and animations, but they also have different statistics that will affect their performance in the various games.

For even more variety, players can earn money by competing in the various games. This money can then be used to customize either the player’s Mii or any of the game’s other characters. Players can pick up new clothes and gear, and even buy tunes from previous Mario and Sonic games.

Once a character has been chosen, the games can begin. There are a multitude of different games that that players can compete in, either choosing events individually or competing in every game. Not only are there versions of actual Olympic winter games like ice hockey, skiing and figure skating, but there are also “dream events,” which are simply fun winter-themed games like snowball fights and traditional events that include powerups and other fun extras.

Players can compete solo against AI-controlled players, or they battle it out with up to 3 other players on the same console. Most of the game controls are handled with the Wii Remote and sometimes the Nunchuk, while some games can also use the Wii Balance Board that was popularized by Wii Fit. However, if you don’t have a Balance Board you won’t be missing out – it’s not required to play any of the games.

Key Features:

  • Wide cast of characters that includes favorite heroes, villains, sidekicks and love interests from the Mario and Sonic franchises, each with different abilities and statistics
  • Players can import their Miis to participate in the action
  • Earn money through competitions to buy new clothes and gear for your Mii or any other character
