Ultimate Alliance 2 follows the popular Civil War storyline that spanned across pretty much every comic book in the Marvel line. As battles between

and villains grow increasingly more destructive, regular humans begin to turn against the heroes. After a particularly devastating battle that levels several city blocks, the Superhero Registration Act is signed into law. Many heroes, including Captain America, see this as an infringement on their rights, and form a resistance movement. Meanwhile, other heroes such as Iron Man actively support the plan. The stage is set for a massive confrontation between these two factions of former allies.

Ultimate Alliance 2 follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, including X-Men Legends and the original Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Players will have the opportunity to create their own 4-member superhero team from a wide roster of Marvel heroes and villains. Players can recreate their favorite superhero teams, or they can make unlikely matchups of their favorite individual heroes. There are over 20 different Marvel characters to choose from, including old-school heroes like Captain America, Spider-Man and Iron Man. Many of these characters are available from the very start, while others must be unlocked as the game progresses.

As the game progresses, the player’s heroes will face armies of enemy thugs, soldiers and robots, as well as a number of Marvel supervillains. In addition to the standard rogue’s gallery of villian’s, the player will also be fighting against the other faction in the Civil War debate. Thus, players who side with the anti-registration group will eventually have to face off against Iron Man, while pro-registration players will do battle with Captain America. Defeating enemies grants experience, which can be used to enhance the abilities of your superhero squad.

One new twist on the gameplay for Ultimate Alliance 2 is the new Fusion system, which allows players to combine the powers of two of their characters to gain a special new effect. There are over 200 possible fusion attacks in the game, each requiring different combinations of heroes and resulting in different effects. For instance, a Fusion attack involving the Human Torch and the Thing has the Thing ripping up a piece of pavement while the Human Torch ignites it, effectively creating a fiery meteor to throw at enemies.
