But confirmation all versions will have $10 a month fee.
We’ve waited far too long for a proper follow-up to Phantasy Star Online. No one quite expected Sega to nail the Diablo-esque formula in an online format so well, so anticipation for Phantasy Star Universe is expectedly high, even more so considering they’re also producing an Xbox 360 version — and that’s what today’s announcement chiefly concerns.
On Wednesday, Sega will be conducting a free, open beta of PSU for Xbox 360 via Xbox Live. Players can literally download the entire game, though you must have XBL Gold Service to participate, without forking over a dime and play for a week. The beta period will come to an end on October 18th.
The game will only be available for download October 11th and 12th, however, so make sure to take advantage of Sega’s offer while it’s there.
Sega also confirmed they will be charging a $10 a month GUARDIANS license to continue playing PSU online, even if you’re a paying XBL Gold Service member. The fee applies to all versions of the game, and PlayStation 2 and PC owners can purchase a discounted six-month license for $49.95. This all seems a little unfair to Xbox 360 owners, and Sega hasn’t responded to our request for comment on the issue.
